Before you start getting into the nitty-gritty of your kitchen renovation, plan your budget according to your family’s unique needs for easy decision-making down the track.
If you’re thinking of doing a kitchen renovation but you don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place! It’s easy to get carried away choosing colours and building a Pinterest board, but considering your budget first will save you time and expense throughout the project.
Everybody uses their kitchen differently, so you’ll need to consider the most important aspects of the room for your family. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, consider the highest touchpoints. Are you spending most of your time working on the bench? Do you want premium appliances? Is your biggest pet peeve the cabinetry layout? Narrow down your main objectives for renovating your kitchen.
Know when to splurge and when to save
Veejay’s has been renovating kitchens in Perth since 1989 – turning your ideas and challenges into fully-functional solutions. We know that navigating the renovation process can be daunting, especially when it comes to allocating your hard-earned money. Here are our top budgeting tips to help you decide what to prioritise in your kitchen renovation.
Your benchtop is one of the highest touchpoints in your kitchen. It’s an asset you will use every day so it needs to go the distance. Consider a sturdy stone benchtop in marble or granite – or perhaps go for stainless steel or polished concrete for a more industrial look. Discover the different benchtop aesthetics within your budget at our showroom in Malaga.
You might love designer hardware, but if your budget won’t extend to it right now you can get something cost-effective for the short term. Cabinet handles and taps can be updated in the future – replace with luxe hardware when your budget allows. We stock a range of hardware for every budget to help you achieve your kitchen renovation goals.
Spend: Kitchen Renovation Team
Choosing reliable, diligent tradespeople with a strong attention to detail will save you time and expense in the long run. Avoid budgets blowing out and excess repair-work by hiring a team of professionals you can trust to get the job done right the first time. Veejay’s offers end to end project management of your kitchen renovation in Perth – taking the stress of coordinating plumbers, electricians and builders away.
Save: Low-use Appliances
If you know you need an oven but realistically you never cook, a standard oven and cooktop will suffice and could save you money that could be spent elsewhere. Perhaps you live alone so a double fridge is an overkill – smaller appliances may also cost you less on your electricity bill. Win, win! We can advise you on the ways to save on kitchen appliances for your family.
Spend: High-use Appliances
Likewise, if there are kitchen tools that you simply can’t live without it’s a good idea to invest in appliances that will make your life easier. Reliable dishwashers and double-size fridges might be necessary for large families, whereas smaller households will have different requirements. We can facilitate the purchase of your chosen appliances and ensure they are installed correctly.
The single most expensive part of a kitchen renovation is the relocation of utilities. If your kitchen layout already works for you, keeping your electrical and plumbing points in the same space will cut costs significantly. Talk to our team if you aren’t sure whether to spend or save on your kitchen layout.
If your kitchen cabinetry is well-designed and made with reliable components, it won’t need replacing for decades to come. To top it off, choose superior-quality brackets that will protect your cabinetry – the last thing you want is cupboard doors hanging off their hinges. We design our cabinets in-house, to make sure you have the perfect solution for your needs.

What is your ideal kitchen workflow?
You’ve probably already thought about the aesthetics you love, and maybe even have a colour scheme in mind, but it doesn’t matter how beautiful your kitchen looks if it’s not efficient to use. ‘The work triangle’ is a common concept with kitchen functionality – it acknowledges the main kitchen contact points: stove, sink and fridge. Use the work triangle to ensure these three points in your kitchen are accessible to each other.
Use a layout to suit your space and your family.
Consider the layout of your kitchen – is it possible or helpful to change it with your kitchen renovation? Or does the shape of your house and your budget restrict this option? The common kitchen layouts below are a great place to start when planning your kitchen renovation.
Galley kitchens (also known as walk-through kitchens) have two countertops along opposite walls, with a walkway between. They are a great option for space-saving – with storage above and below the countertops between appliances and windows.
L-shaped kitchens are pretty self-explanatory, but this is a good option for small-medium spaces with two countertops running along adjacent walls. This layout is perfect for creating multiple workspaces and restricts traffic – so you’re not constantly bumping into your family when you are trying to cook a meal.
U-shaped kitchens are an extension of the L-shaped layout above. They’re also great for multiple workspaces and traffic flow with countertops wrapping around the space – U-shaped kitchens are great when space isn’t a restriction!
Island kitchens incorporate a central countertop unattached to the kitchen walls. Again ideal for larger spaces, the kitchen counter can add additional storage and workspace, as well as a potential dining space with a breakfast bar. Islands help to encourage social interactions, where family and guests can spend time while others are cooking.
Endless possibilities made possible with your kitchen renovation.
Once you’ve covered the basics of how you will use your kitchen, the constraints of your space and optimum layouts, the fun part can truly begin. Exploring the aesthetic elements alongside your custom kitchen renovation team will help your dreams become a reality and bring your new kitchen to life.

Tiled splash backs are making a comeback.
Over the past year we have seen a new (old) trend reappear.
Before Glass was introduced as a splashback , tiles were used on 99% of all Kitchen renovations.
Clients were attracted to the Glass due to ” no grout ‘ so giving the client less maintenance, with a large range of colour choices , it was the best choice.
We are now seeing a big change in trend with the tiles making a big comeback. This is partly because of some absolutely sublime colours , patterns and texture you can now have in tiles creating such a feature along with adding depth and character. This option can sometimes be more cost effective and reduce installation time.
Did you watch The Block?
Well if you did then you would have seen the latest trends , one of which is the Black, Charcoal and Grey tones used along with wood textures and greenery, creating a real luxury look yet a nice calm mood with in the space.

Veejay’s Renovations has just completed this WOW Ensuite, the clients brief was a Moroccan style, and I think you will agree the brief was definitely met. The basins were chosen and everything was centred around them. This Ensuite has river views so we made sure the bath was situated to take advantage of this view, making sure they also had privacy.
The Moroccan tiles were carefully laid out before tiling to make sure they were applied in the correct pattern.
These fun creative jobs are great to work on and we always look forward to the end result!!
This room is so fun, warm, textural and colourful – we love it!
